New Expanded Ohio Sales Tax Holiday
Tuesday July 30th through Thursday August 8th
With the July 4th holiday behind us once again, the focus of many families shifts to Back to School. As it has done in recent years, the State of Ohio will once again have a “sales tax holiday,” when the purchase of certain items will be exempt from sales tax.
This year, the sales tax holiday is expanded to cover 10 days, beginning on Tuesday July 30th and ending on Thursday August 8th. During this period, all purchases of tangible personal property with a selling price of $500 or less will be exempt from sales tax. This exemption goes beyond school related supplies, and will cover essentially any tangible items sold that are individually priced at under $500. The exemption even includes food purchased for dine-in consumption at a restaurant (excluding alcohol)! The only items excluded from the exemption are motor vehicles, watercraft or outboard motors required to be titled, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products, and items containing marijuana.
This sales tax holiday effectively represents a discount of 7.25% on purchases made in Mercer, Auglaize, Darke, Van Wert and Shelby counties! Shoppers need do nothing to take advantage of this sales tax holiday. The retailer should automatically apply the sales tax exemption to all eligible purchases.
